Details

The Series 2 was the first Apple Watch rated for swimming and the first with built-in GPS, with a display much brighter than the Series 1. Aluminum models also earned a reputation for hairline cracks that start at the edge of the screen, sometimes without any obvious impact, and an aging battery can push the panel up from the case.

This OLED display screen assembly fits the 38mm Series 2. Sold as OEM Pull, it's a used Apple display recovered from another watch.

When the 38mm Series 2 needs a new screen

Replace it when a crack runs in from the edge, when the display has been lifted by a swollen battery, when the screen stays dark while the watch still vibrates, or when touch stops working. Lines or flicker after a drop are a display fault too.

Repair notes for an older watch

If the battery has swollen, replace it in the same job. Use gentle heat and a thin blade, lift the screen slowly so the cables aren't strained, and fit new adhesive. The swim rating can't be counted on after the case has been opened, so keep the repaired watch out of the pool.
