9239C0 / B614Q7 PBUS and Charger IC for MacBook Pro A1706 / A1708

A 2016 or 2017 MacBook Pro that won't power on, even on a known-good USB-C charger, often comes down to the PBUS supply. The 9239C0 / B614Q7 is a 40-pin BGA PBUS supply and battery charger IC listed for the A1706 and A1708 from late 2016 and mid 2017.

Power faults to investigate

• No power on a good charger.

• Battery won't charge.

• Charger stuck at low wattage.

• A short on the PBUS rail.

Diagnosis

Use a USB-C power meter to see what the machine negotiates. If it stays at 5 V, the problem may be before or at the charger. Measure PBUS and the battery rails against the schematic for your board number and check for shorts before lifting the chip.

This is BGA work on a thin board, so use bottom heat and support the board. Fit the new chip on fresh flux, then test with and without the battery. Check charging at full wattage once it powers on.
