How to choose a DC power supply

  • Voltage and current range. Model numbers often state it – a "3005" supply delivers up to 30 V and 5 A, a "1505" up to 15 V and 5 A. Phones need much less, but headroom helps for laptops and short-killing.

  • Current display. A precise ammeter (mA resolution) shows the boot current pattern; some smart supplies plot current curves.

  • Short killing. Higher-current supplies can be used to burn out shorted capacitors – use with care.

FAQ

Why use a DC power supply for phone repair?

It powers the board without a battery and shows the current draw, which reveals shorts, boot problems and charging faults.

What do the numbers 3005 or 1505 mean?

They describe the maximum output: 3005 = 30 V / 5 A, 1505 = 15 V / 5 A, and 3010 = 30 V / 10 A.

What is a USB ampere meter used for?

It shows charging voltage and current between charger and phone, to check if a phone charges or fast-charges correctly.
