Details

The iPhone 8 Plus has a dual camera with wide and telephoto lenses, and Portrait mode relies on both of them. When one lens fails, Portrait mode and zoom are often the first things to stop working, even before the main camera shows a fault.

This aftermarket rear camera module is the dual camera for the iPhone 8 Plus.

Signs of a failing module

Portrait mode or 2x zoom stops working or shows an error.
The camera shows a black picture or freezes when opened.
Photos are blurry with clean, intact lens glass.
The image shakes or the camera buzzes.

The screen comes off to reach the module, which needs pentalobe and tri-point drivers, a suction cup and picks. After fitting, test both lenses, Portrait mode, zoom, focus and the flash before closing the phone. Rule out a cracked lens cover first, since it causes haze. Drops and liquid exposure are the usual causes of module failure, so check the connector area for corrosion while the phone is open.

With both lenses working, the 8 Plus is ready for portraits and zoomed shots again.
